Why Offices and Workplaces Need AEDs

Workplace risk factors:

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA (2021): "Providing AEDs in the workplace combined with CPR-trained employees is one of the most effective measures for reducing sudden cardiac arrest fatalities at work."

Additionally, Thailand's Ministerial Regulation No. 69 (2021) requires high-rise buildings (23m+) and extra-large buildings (10,000 sqm+) to provide AED installation points.

AED Quantity and Placement by Workplace Type

Office buildings: - 1 unit per floor (if area exceeds 500 sq.m.) or 1 per 2 floors - Placement: near main corridors, high-traffic areas like large meeting rooms, elevator lobbies, or pantry areas - Small offices (fewer than 50 people): 1 unit at a central location

Industrial factories: - 1 unit per production zone + 1 at the office area - Must use IP65-rated models for dusty, humid, or wet areas — such as the Amoul i-Series - Install in red/green AED cabinets visible from a distance

Workplace Emergency Response Plan

Having an AED is not enough — you need a clear emergency response plan:

Emergency Response Plan components:

1. Emergency Response Team (ERT) — Designate at least 2 CPR/AED-trained employees per shift
2. AED location map — Post maps on every floor showing all AED locations
3. Response procedure — Who calls 1669, who retrieves the AED, who starts CPR (clear role assignment)
4. Alert system — How to raise an emergency alert within the organization (radio, phone, PA system)
5. Drills — Conduct simulation exercises at least twice yearly, per AHA (American Heart Association, 2020) recommendations

Immediate steps after AED installation: - Inform all employees where AEDs are located - Post AED signage visible from main corridors - Assign a monthly AED inspection coordinator - Register AED devices with local emergency systems (if available)
